A Day With Cate | Mentoring-Minnesota and Georgia

I mentioned last fall that I had a fun opportunity to be a Project Facilitator for a high school senior down in Georgia by acting as a mentor to her about all things photography.

Her name is Cate, and I first introduced you to her back in September.

Beautiful Miss Cate

Cate had the opportunity to fly back up to the cold Minnesota land recently. Our next project was to hang out in the studio and experiment with studio lighting at a local studio space.

It is always fun to experiment with lighting that you can control in an environment dedicated to photography. We were at the Twin Cities Photography Group studio location in St. Paul. Diane always takes good care of me when I attend TCPG! Pictured is Cate fixing the hair and eyelashes of our test dummy model. I don't think we ever named this dummy! We did change her hair wig though.

We were shooting with our own cameras, (Cate is Canon, I am Nikon) and using the Paul C. Buff AlienBees B800 flash units with PocketWizard transceivers and a large softbox. (Please note, I am not affiliated with any of the products I have linked to!)

It was a pleasure to be able to give her the opportunity to mess around with lighting that she otherwise doesn't have access to back home in Georgia.

Cate and her camera

After our time in the studio, we went out to lunch and I learned more about all of the goals and aspirations this young lady has upon her graduation from high school. I can't be more proud of her! Congratulations, Cate, on all that you are doing. It has been a tough last year of high school for you, but it is awesome to see you thriving and preparing yourself for the world and amazing opportunities that are waiting for you!

Can't wait to see you soon!
